“Feeding my shadow” (2023)

“The Force of Nurture” at Mothbelly Gallery

Statement

My series, The Force of Nurture, is my most emotional body of work. Incorporating surrealism into my creations has given me the freedom to concretize vulnerable emotions relating to my subject matter. Over the years, I’ve felt nagged to paint about trauma, the complexities of motherhood, shame, and mental health struggles. Experimenting with several mediums for this series including acrylic, gouache, clay, and textiles, has helped me communicate my inspirations in a clearer way.

My objective with this series was to purge emotional weight off of me, and onto my work. I’ve worked on this collection for myself, for my son, for my lineage, and for the women who came before me that didn’t have the freedom, our outlet, to heal in this way. Allowing myself to paint in this way has made me appreciate the sacredness of creating art.
